Sooner Catholic Letters

These are links to issues of the Sooner Catholic which have letters to the editor relevant to our struggle with the IAF in the Oklahoma City Diocese.  If you have submitted a  letter to the editor, which was not printed in the Sooner Catholic, we will be happy to include it here so long as it stays within the bounds of Christian charity and does not say anything blatantly disrespectful of the Archbishop or clergy.  Letters are in chronological order, with the most recent at the bottom.

Justice, not Justice-ism

A Letter from Dr. Dominic Pedulla of St. John the Baptist Parish published in the February 22, 2009 Sooner Catholic (page 16).  Dr. Pedulla discusses the nature of Catholic Social Justice and our involvement in the world as Catholics.

Blessed Virgin Mary, Pray for Us.

"IAF and the Pope. In his letter of November 14, 2008, Mr. Klinge quotes Pope Benedict XVI incompletely. The quote from Deus Caritas Est—in context is as follows: The Church cannot and must not take upon herself the political battle to bring about the most just society possible. She cannot and must not replace the State. Yet at the same time she cannot and must not remain on the sidelines in the fight for justice. She has to play her part through rational argument and she has to reawaken the spiritual energy without which justice, which always demands sacrifice, cannot prevail and prosper. A just society must be the achievement of politics, not of the Church. Yet the promotion of justice through efforts to bring about openness of mind and will to the demands of the common good is something which concerns the Church deeply. (Emphasis added to highlight the section quoted by Mr. Klinge.)"

-Ricky & Jo Joyce

Letter to Ray Haefele on IAF

“Who is going to save our Church? Not our bishops, not our priests and religious. It is up to you, the people. You have the minds, the eyes, the ears to save the Church. Your mission is to see that your priests act like priests, your bishops, like bishops, and your religious act like religious.” (Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen)49 In order to maintain the integrity of our Catholic Church, we must stay away from the politics in which the IAF engages.  Whether a charitable institution or an institution of God, like the Catholic Church, we must remember our mission—to lift up souls, not to send people to hell, albeit with a living wage and affordable housing. That would be a scandal.

-Ricky & Jo Joyce

Letter to Ray Haefele on IAF

"The days of Catholic charities and agencies quietly winking at immoral practices such as contraception in opposition to Catholic faith — the institutional form of a double life — are nearly over. A social justice ideology divorcing faith from sexual morality is corrupt and damaging."

-Dr. Dominic Pedulla
